Youth Radio (UNICEF Kyrgyzstan)

Description: Healthy Airwaves For Youth (HAFY) aims to increase the level of knowledge and awareness of the dangers of HIV/AIDS/STI, drug use and reproductive health among young people in five rural and remote regions of Kyrgyzstan via community based and interactive health promotion radio programming. The HAFY project was initiated in 2002 with financial support from the UK National Committee of UNICEF.

Activities: The radio stations working within the HAFY network are directly involving young people as ‘knowledge creators and providers’. HCR facilitated an intensive workshop and developed a monitoring and evaluation Toolbox.

Rapid Response Radio Feasibility Study

Description: To determine whether a rapid response radio programming studio and unit would assist relief and aid agencies in communicating with affected communities in times of emergencies and natural disasters

Activities: Monographs of the findings of a Delphi study and an introductory briefing of the role and operations of a rapid response unit were published. Contact HCR for a copy of the report. Key collaborators were Amy Tait, Ross James, Gail Phillips.

Peace Radio "Soap" Training Manuals

Description:In collaboration with Search for Common Ground Radio a series of training manuals was developed for radio "soaps" (drama) for peace and reconciliation. Jon Hargreaves, Francis Rolt and Ross James were the key collaborators.

Healthworks

Description:A 13-part radio program to increase the knowledge of health workers in health promotion. The series is based on teaching materials from the Department of Health Promotion, Curtin University. The series is available free of charge to radio stations to broadcast locally. A revised text-based version, without audio programs, was included in the e-TALC Health Development CD ROMs. Janice Reid, Ross James, Nyomi Beale, Peter Howat and Jenny Collins were the key collaborators. Radio Listener's Survey: Mongolia

Description:In the first-ever mass media survey in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, media consumption and information technology ownership patterns were identified. Health-related factors were also explored. A questionnaire was administered to 1 000 interviewees and focus groups were conducted with a further 36 participants.>

Activities: Research data is being implemented by local radio station WIND FM, and several international radio broadcasters.

Training in Peace-building Radio

Description: Design of resources for training courses in peace-building radio

Activities: Materials, curriculum and resources were field-tested and developed in 2001 with PASTT funding, in a collaborative project with Notre Dame University, Cotabato City, Philippines. Key collaborators were Ross James,Victoria Besoain, Tania Manners
