hcr and partners in Indonesia have opportunities for university students from Australia and Indonesia to work on a practical project in Bali, Indonesia. Bali Work Placement (BWP) is delivered by hcr in collaboration with Heartline Bali FM (HLB) in a rural Balinese village. Students live and work for three weeks in the community, contributing to a project that is positively impacting the people who live there.

HLB is a community-centered radio station that operates on principles related to community development, health promotion and public health. Radio programming and off-air initiatives help address the health and social needs that exist within the region.

BWP brings students from Australia and Indonesia to work and learn together in a team-based approach. Under the guidance of experienced and qualified supervisors and faculty, students practice health promotion/community development in a cross-cultural setting for three weeks.

For example . . .

In 2009 students conducted a re-evaluation needs assessment of community health and social needs. After a week of cultural orientation and learning about research skills in developing countries, the team then conducted a short survey. Main findings: the community wanted the project to focus on environment/pollution, nutrition and lack of opportunities for young people. The team then started producing on-air product that started the bigger process of addressing these issues.

A subsequent workplacement built on those findings and further investigated the issue of environment in paartnership with local organisations. After a brief study, the team developed a health promotion plan and radio messages to support a locally-led initiative. A strong partnership was built and Heartline Bali received national publicity for its involvement in a project called Say No To Plastic Click here to read a newspaper article about it.

Other workplacement teams have worked on nutrition activities. One project focused on breastfeeding patterns in partnership with the local health department. Another project documented experiences of local health volunteers; another began raising physical activity levels in a local high school.

A team of Australian and Indonesian students completed university workplace requirements in a three week project at Heartline Bali FM. hcr's Dane Waters and Edith Cowan University's Jill Darby supervised the students through activities with local health agencies and high school students. Radio messages and ongoing plans were devised. More
