Cultural Daytour
People who have been on the Cultural Daytour have said:
"It was the best day of our 10-day holiday in Bali"
"I've been to Bali for my holidays for 6 years and never had the chance to go into a traditional Balinese village or home"
"I learnt a lot about Balinese culture on this daytour"
Daytour with a Difference
This is a daytour with a difference! Visit one of Bali's traditional villages, Tulikup. Its about 30 kms from Denpasar. Mix with local people, learn how the villagers live.
The purpose of the daytour is to promote social change and development through a low-impact village experience that is not-for-profit but keeps money in the village for local people.
The Cultural Daytour gives you an opportunity to experience how global economic trends can impact Tulikup, a small, seemingly isolated, traditional Balinese village. You help sustain the village economy because the tour is designed to keep as much money from your fees in the village as possible.
Low Impact
Only small groups of visitors are taken through the village to preserve the socio-cultural environment. Observe and participate in some typical village activities. These may include:
- Pandan weaving
- Brick making
- Traditional dancing
You’ll also visit
- HL Bali Radio Station (for lunch, toilets)
- The local vegetable and fruit market to buy fruit to give to local vulnerable families.
- And, if people are working at the time, you might be able to visit water buffalo breeders and rice farmers.

Payment
A guide and an air-conditioned minivan will collect you at your hotel at about 8.00AM. You will visit the traditional market and begin the daytour. You return to your hotel about 6.00PM. Lunch is provided at extra cost (to be advised when making your booking).
The price is US$32 each (2-4 participants), US$28 each (5-8 participants). Children aged 5-9 years are charged 50% of the adult price. Children aged 10 years and older are charged at adult prices.

Committed to the Community
The Cultural Daytour has been organised by HL Bali, a commercial radio station, earning income from the sale of airtime to local and national advertisers, and producing radio materials for health and social development agencies. HL Bali is committed to the local community. Several off-air activities were prompted by a major community needs assessment survey and discussion with other partners and village leaders. The following are only two of them.
- Nutrition Project with the Department of Nutrition in the Polytechnic of Health, Denpasar. This project educated mothers and children, provided severely malnourished children with WHO-approved supplemental feeding, and most importantly, strengthened the local health clinic which was under-resourced.
- A library for children. The radio station has a room set aside for children's activities such as reading library books, purchased with funds from donors.
HCR was invited by HL Bali FM to design its on-air and off-air health and community development activities. HCR has trained the radio station's programmers (crew) to become specialists in health-promoting radio.
HL Bali's radio programs contain information and education for social development, as well as programs designed to strengthen listener's sense of cultural identity. HL crew train volunteers from the village to record interviews with local identities. As much as possible the radio programs are integrated into the daily life of the surrounding villages. People are paid for their work. We work on the principle of mutual obligation. When a local sports team asked us to sponsor them with uniforms we agreed, in return for helping to produce a village sports program.
Stay Involved and Geocaching!

- Are you a geocacher? HL Bali has a geocache. Go to www.geocaching.com and look for HL Bali by jilaross or search for Waypoint: GCT6NE. A nearby cache (Waypoint GC119JE) was placed by a recent visitor to HLB.
