Our profile

  • We are committed to: communication for development particularly social justice and community transformation
  • We are motivated by: listeners who become agents of learning and not objects of learning because they have been given the opportunity to participate in the design and delivery of radio programming content (communication for development)
  • Who we work FOR: we tend to work with disadvantaged groups under-served by government or other agencies. We give priority to empowering vulnerable and marginalised groups
  • Who we work WITH: communities, governments, donor agencies and NGOs, radio programming workers, and communication for development practitioners
  • What We Deliver: consulting, training and resources for community-centred radio activities that promote health, build peace, empower disadvantaged communities and respond to natural disasters

Our expertise

Our mentors, coaches, trainers, consultants and associates have a formidable wealth of expertise and experience.

  • Some have no education beyond primary or grade school but specialist skills in community-level immersion, identification, capacity, self-development and sustainability
  • Others have bachelors, masters and PhD degrees in health promotion, community development, mass media, communication, cross-cultural training, engineering, education
  • Some began their community radio and development careers recently while others of us are touching the 40-year mark
  • Some of us haven't moved far beyond our village while others have lived and worked in as many as five different countries and cultures
  • Some of stay in our location while others of us travel for as much as four months of the year to different locations and contexts
  • some of us work in quite stable environments while others live and work in zones of war or turbulent civil unrest, or areas afflicted by a major disaster

Our skills-base

Our training and careers include: health promotion, training design and delivery, communication for development, ethnography, gender, peacebuilding, community development and transformation, communication for disaster response, behaviour change communication, project planning and management, health communication, research design and implementation. Oh! (Nearly forgot!) and community-centred radio strategies....

International trainers: authorised by hcr after one-on-one mentoring and a training of trainers course

Australian-based hcr trainers and educators: have Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment and Training, and post-graduate degrees
